Motorcyclist leads police on high-speed chase through 2 counties

Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Indianapolis man this weekend after he led them on a dangerous high-speed chase through Johnson and Morgan counties.

Micah Andrew Joel Cox, 20, 1030 S. Mitchner Avenue, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement by fleeing in a vehicle, a felony, and reckless driving.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies spotted a motorcycle swerving in and out of traffic near Smith Valley and Peterman roads, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

It crossed a solid double yellow line into oncoming traffic, almost causing a crash, according to the report.

Deputies tried to stop the motorcyclist, who turned around and looked at them, then sped off, the report said.

The motorcycle did not have a license plate, deputies said.

Speeds reached 90 mph on Smith Valley Road as they approached Morgantown Road, the report said. Speeds reached about 110 mph.

“As I pursued south on State Road 37, I observed the motorcycle zig-zag from the left lane to the right lane in between traffic without using any type of signal. I observed the motorcycle travel the center dividing line between several southbound vehicles causing them to swerve in different directions,” deputies said in the report.

Traveling about 100 mph, the motorcyclist disregarded a red light at the intersection of State Road 37 and State Road 144, according to the report.

The high-speed chase continued into Morgan County, where the motorcyclist reached maximum speeds in a neighborhood before losing control and cresting a hill at about 80 mph, causing it to run off the road and crash, the report said.

Deputies observed Cox crawling through the weeds. As they approached him in the weeds, Cox yelled out that he was sorry for running, but he was scared because he didn’t have a driver’s license, the report said.

He was arrested.

He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to be treated for minor injuries before being brought to the Johnson County jail, where he was released on $4,200 bond.
