Sheriff’s office uses drone, SWAT team for suicidal man

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone and SWAT team to a home in the Center Grove area after a suicidal man was waving a gun around in the back yard of his home.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to a home on Bloomsbury South Drive in the Kensington Grove subdivision at 1:58 p.m. Friday to a report of a man who had made threats to himself and had a handgun.

An officer arrived at the home and saw a man in the back yard of the home, waving around a gun in what the officer said was an aggressive manner, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

The man pointed the gun at his chest several times and would not speak to officers. He became more upset as a drone flew above him and threatened to shoot the drone, the report said.

A sheriff’s deputy asked for the SWAT team to respond to the situation. The man came in and out of the home several times holding the gun while deputies waited for the SWAT team, according to the report.

A deputy asked for the man to put down the gun. The man said he would if the deputy surrendered his gun as well, the report said.

The man was taken to a local hospital for mental health treatment, according to the report.
