Clerk-treasurer candidate would not accept office if elected

One candidate in the Trafalgar Clerk-Treasurer race will not accept the position if she is elected.

Independent candidate Kimberly Rice missed the deadline to withdraw from the race, and would no longer accept the office of clerk-treasurer if elected due to personal circumstances, she said in an email.

“I will not be able to accept the position if elected, but do appreciate and adore everyone’s confidence concerning the position,” Rice said in an email.

Incumbent Republican Donna Moore, Rice’s opponent in the race, filed a challenge to her candidacy on Oct. 11, hoping to get her removed from the ballot altogether, citing a previous criminal conviction against Rice. The Johnson County Election Board denied the challenge on Wednesday, as Moore missed the filing deadline by almost two months, the board said.

Moore, who is running for a second term, wants another four years in office to see how she can best use the resources she has available by attending conferences and studying the law, she said.

“By keeping someone in office over one term, the community can be assured that the knowledge gained in office isn’t lost and continues to develop.”

The clerk-treasurer manages the town’s accounts and finances, records minutes from council and committee meetings, invests town funds, manages payroll, keeps town records and submits financial information to the state.
