Indian Creek to hold public meeting on new facility

Indian Creek schools expects to break ground on a new multi-million dollar transportation and maintenance facility in November, and on Tuesday, it will hold a public meeting to begin conversations about which construction company should do the work.

The public is invited to be a part of those conversations.

The school district won’t take any official action during the meeting, which will serve as a time for the public to be better informed about the potential cost of the project based on the bids Indian Creek schools received from construction companies.

After the meeting, CORE Construction, a Schererville-based contractor the district hired, will put together a spreadsheet with a suggested bid package, which will inform school administrators of the maximum amount of debt the schools would enter into to complete the facility, Superintendent Tim Edsell said.

The school board will vote on the project at its next regular meeting in November, he said.

The building, which will feature about 19,500 square feet of floor space, will include offices for the district’s transportation personnel, sandwiched by four bus bays on one side and a garage for bus maintenance and repair on the other. School officials want to get the project done by the end of May, Edsell said.

The facility will be be built on a property just south of Indian Creek Elementary School. Building the new facility south of the school buildings rather than in a more centralized location will ease traffic. The current maintenance and transportation area is behind the middle school, which has created traffic jams during pick-up and drop-off times, he said.

The new facility will have space for 40 to 45 buses, which will fit all the district’s vehicles, including spare buses, Edsell said.
