A high-tech manufacturing company with a central Indiana footprint wants to build its corporate headquarters and warehouse in Greenwood, and the company already has plans to expand the 100,000-square-foot building twice in the next five years.
Lionshead Precision Metals, LLC, which had a facility on the south side of Indianapolis, wants to build a new facility further south, in southeast Greenwood, directly east of Interstate 65 near Stop 18 Road.
The city’s Advisory Plan Commission recently approved a rezone of about 28 acres to heavy industrial from suburban fringe for construction of the facility, and sent a favorable recommendation to the city council, which followed suit, unanimously approving the rezone last week.
In order to do that, city officials had to remove the property from the I-65/Worthsville Overlay Zone, which does not allow for manufacturing facilities in that area. The company will still be expected to follow similar requirements to those in the overlay zone, said Dale Davis, planning director.
“Since this is being removed from the overlay district, we wanted to make sure that overlay district oversight is still in place,” Davis said. “This will still have to go before the overlay committee. It will still have to have that architectural review. It will still have to meet those same standards.”
The overlay zone features guidelines for development along the interstate, including which types of development can go where, and provides additional rules for how buildings must be constructed.
Company owners agreed to meet the overlay zone’s landscape and architectural standards, both of which must be reviewed and approved by the overlay committee, according to city documents.
Company leaders plan to build the initial facility toward the south end of the property so they can expand the building at least twice, at the north end. All expansions would resemble the original elevation, Davis said.
Lionshead offers precision sheet metal fabricating with multiple stamping and laser cutting resources, close tolerance machining, welding and assembly, according to its website. The company was founded in 1963 in Indianapolis.
