Greenwood woman charged for stealing from PTO

A Greenwood woman faces a misdemeanor charge after police said she stole more than $1,000 from a Center Grove PTO.

Jennifer Dobbins, 37, has been charged with conversion, a Class A misdemeanor, for the August incidents.

Dobbins has not been arrested and instead faces a summons to appear in court. She will have an initial hearing on the charge on Monday, according to online court documents.

A president and two treasurers of the North Grove Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization told a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy in late September that Dobbins withdrew money from the PTO’s bank account using ATM transactions, according to charging documents filed in October in Johnson County Superior Court 3.

Bank statements showed that Dobbins had made two withdrawals of $500 and one withdrawal of $400 from the account in August. All of the withdrawals were from a card that was registered to Dobbins, court documents said.

PTOs are Parent Teacher Organizations that fund teacher and school needs through fundraisers and member dues. PTOs are typically ran by parent volunteers.

A PTO meeting was called in late September that included school administrators. Dobbins told PTO leaders and administrators that she had taken the money from the account, according to charging documents.

Center Grove Community Schools spokeswoman Stacy Conrad responded to a voicemail seeking comment with the following emailed statement:

“North Grove Elementary’s Parent Teacher Organization is working with the Johnson County Prosecutor and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department regarding the reported misuse of PTO funds. Any questions regarding the case should be directed to the Prosecutor’s Office.”
