ISSMA cancels remaining school music events

Although it’s still possible students will return to school after May 1, the Indiana State School Music Association, or ISSMA, made the decision Thursday to cancel all student music events through the end of the school year.

ISSMA cited the lack of rehearsal opportunities as a driving factor behind the decision, according to a news release from the association.

The lack of large gatherings is due to suggestions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of social distancing, to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“The ISSMA Executive Committee and staff share in the disappointment felt by students, directors, family members and supporters of the outstanding school music ensembles in Indiana,” the news release said.

“We are especially saddened that seniors will not be afforded the opportunity to participate in ISSMA events as they complete their high school career.”
