Duke Energy announces local K-12 grants

Johnson County educational institutions will benefit from $29,000 in grants from Duke Energy, meant to support education in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The grants, announced Wednesday, include $5,000 to Franklin Community Schools and $24,000 to Johnson County Community Learning Center. The grants are among $382,000 in grants awarded to 25 Indiana school districts and educational institutions, according to a news release from Duke Energy.

Duke Energy awarded the grants to educational programs focused on summer reading programs, science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, and experiential learning.

Franklin schools will use the money for its 2020 Summer Launch Camp, which will allow students in kindergarten through fourth grade to explore STEM opportunities. Johnson County Community Learning Center will the money to help students in kindergarten through third grade who need additional assistance with reading instruction, said Jean Renk, a Duke spokesperson.

The funding is expected to help schools find a sense of stability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These extraordinary education organizations are essential to the well-being and success of our state in these difficult times,” Duke Energy state president for Indiana Stan Pinegar said in the news release. “We are grateful for the work they do to serve our communities, and recognize that flexibility in applying these funds is needed during this time of uncertainty.”
