Franklin College will send checks to students who qualify

Franklin College is making sure some of its full-time students get paid during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The college announced Thursday it received funds from the federal government this week as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act. It will use information from full-time students’ Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine who will receive a check, according to a Franklin College news release.

Students must be Title IV-eligible, or eligible for financial aid, to receive the money, Franklin College President Kerry Prather said in an email.

Most college students do not qualify for the federal coronavirus relief stimulus checks since they are listed as dependents’ on their parents tax returns, according to the Internal Revenue Service, which is distributing the checks.

Franklin College students will need to submit an Emergency Relief Grant Application developed by the college by June 2 to receive the money by mailed check, according to the news release. Students should log into their MyFC accounts to make sure they have the right address on file before submitting their applications. Students will receive money seven to 10 days following the Tuesday after they submit it, Prather said.

Franklin College students have been attending school virtually since March, and will not return to in-person classes for the rest of the spring semester. On April 24, the college decided to postpone its spring graduation ceremony to Oct. 11.
