No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported this weekend in Johnson County.
The death toll, according to the Indiana State Department of Health, remains at 72, the number of deaths the Johnson County Health Department reported Friday evening.
The number of cases, however, spiked, with 80 more laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases reported Saturday and Sunday, bringing to 706 the number of cases in the county.
The state health department on Sunday said the number of positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 19,933, following the emergence of 638 more cases.
The state has reported more than 600 new cases in nine of its last 10 daily reports.
The state reported 665 new cases on Saturday, 795 on Friday, 653 on Thursday, 594 on Wednesday, 627 on Tuesday and 949 on Monday.
The state said Sunday that the cumulative death toll in the state rose to 1,132, up from 1,115 the previous day—an increase of 17.
About 91% of the total deaths involve those who are age 60 or older. About 74% of those who have died are older than 70. Men account for more than 53% of the deaths.
The state reported that 108,859 people have been tested so far, up from 104,141 in Saturday’s report—an increase of 4,718. That’s the highest number of new tests reported by the department in a daily report, exceeding Friday’s number of 4,641.
The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.
New positive cases, deaths and tests have occurred over a range of dates but were reported to the department in the previous day.
The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.
Nearby Indianapolis reported 6,176 cumulative cases—up from 5,983 the previous day, an increase of 193 cases.
The state reported 360 cumulative deaths in the city, up from 357 in Saturday’s report. The state said 27,968 people have been tested.
As for surrounding counties, Hamilton had 824 positive cases; Hendricks 764; Boone 198; Hancock 230; Madison 439; Morgan 163; and Shelby 230.
Every Indiana county has at least two cases.
The department said 43.7% of the state’s intensive care unit beds were still available. About 16.3% are being used by COVID-19 patients.
The department also said 80.4% of the state’s ventilators were available. About 8% were being used for COVID-19 patients.
Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.
As of Sunday morning, 1.13 million cases had been reported in the United States, with 66,430 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University & Medicine. More than 175,000 people have recovered.
More than 3.45 million cases have been reported globally, with 244,295 deaths. More than 1.1 million people have recovered.
