Deputy’s home damaged in fire

A sheriff’s deputy’s Bargersville home caught fire Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread damage to the attic and displacing the family.

The fire at the house in the 700 block of N 575 W, was called in about 1:19 p.m. Tuesday. The Bargersville Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene about 10 minutes later. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from the White River Township and Trafalgar fire departments also responded, extinguishing the majority of the fire about 1:45 p.m. The Franklin Fire Department helped man the Bargersville fire house during the fire, said Mike Pruitt, deputy chief of the Bargersville Community Fire Department.

The fire was caused by a faulty flue pipe, according to a news release from Bargersville Fire. The home sustained serious fire damage to the attic and smoke and water damage to the main level.

No one was injured. The deputy’s wife was home at the time and was able to escape. Although there were also some dogs inside, they were not harmed, Pruitt said.

The deputy and his wife are staying with a Bargersville police officer until their home is habitable again, he said.

The Johnson County Fraternal Order of Police will help the deputy’s family with any financial needs for the time being, said Andy Fisher, major for the sheriff’s office.
