Greenwood police responded to two incidents Wednesday night near U.S. 31, Fry Road

Greenwood police responded to two incidents around the same time Wednesday night near U.S. 31 and Fry Road.

At 9:40 p.m., police responded to a report of shots fired in the 600 and 700 blocks of Brookview Drive, where someone had shot a window out of a car. Just after 10 p.m., a pedestrian was struck and killed at U.S. 31 and Hilltop Drive, which shut down traffic for hours.

The incidents are unrelated, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief and spokesperson for the Greenwood Police Department.

A 38-year-old Indianapolis man was struck and killed Wednesday night. A Jeep Wrangler hit the man on U.S. 31 in an unlit area without a crosswalk, according to a Greenwood police report.

Ryan Matthew Mann, who was wearing jeans and a dark-colored hoodie, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

The driver had just left work at an area liquor store when the accident occurred, the report said.

The driver said he was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 in the far right lane when a he saw a figure, later identified as Mann, in the road on the ground in his lane. Mann popped up in front of him, facing his vehicle with his hands in the air, prior to being struck by the Jeep. The driver said he did not have time to brake before he hit Mann, and pulled over immediately afterward, according to the report.

The driver did not appear to have been drinking, police said. He fully cooperated with police and agreed to a blood alcohol content test. Toxicology results were still pending Friday, but he blew a .000 on a portable breathalyzer, the report said.

About two miles away, police were responding to reports of shots fired.

Police observed a white 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor with the back window shattered and damage to the rear view mirror. The vehicle was sitting stationary on the road in the 600 block of Brookview Drive, facing south, unoccupied, according to another report from the Greenwood Police Department.

An officer and his K9 checked the area after it was reported that two individuals, both possibly males, were seen running behind houses in the area, according to the report. Police did not locate anyone, the report said.

A resident of the home where the car was parked said she was in the living room looking out the window when she saw two flashes from a gun, but heard three shots. She said she was unable to see who was firing the shots, according to the report. Another resident said he did not see who fired the gun, but heard three shots. Both residents said the car belonged to their son, who was not there at the time, according to the report.

Multiple neighbors told police they heard gunshots but didn’t see anything, the report said.

Police found a spent shell casing in a cup holder in the car, and another on the side of a nearby driveway.

Officers were on the scene in the Colonial Meadows neighborhood until about 11 p.m., according to the report.
