Crews investigating after fire rips through Greenwood’s 84 Lumber warehouse

A large fire ripped through a Greenwood lumber warehouse early Friday morning.

Crews responded to a report of a business fire at 84 Lumber, 484 E. Worthsville Road, Greenwood, at 5:20 a.m. Friday. Half of the building was already engulfed in flames when the Greenwood Fire Department arrived, said Chad Tatman, spokesperson for the department.

There were no injuries as no employees were inside the building at the time of the fire, said Sarah Mellema, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania-based company.

The fire was contained to the main building, which suffered significant damage. The back of the warehouse bore the brunt of the fire damage, and the rest of the facility has smoke and water damage, Tatman said. The lumber yard and sheds were not damaged, Mellema said.

An exact cost of the damages has not been determined yet.

84 Lumber is a private lumber and housing materials supplier based in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania. The company has 250 locations across the country. The Greenwood location consists of two large warehouses full of materials and sits on 6.8 acres.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Tatman said. 84 Lumber is working closely with authorities to investigate the fire, and the company plans to restore the site as soon as possible, Mellema said.

"We want to thank the local fire departments and first responders for their quick and efficient response," she said. "We plan to restore the store and get back to serving our customers as soon as possible."

Although there was limited hydrant access, according to the Bargersville Community Fire Department, the fire was extinguished in about an hour with help from the Bargersville and White River Township fire departments, he said.

Worthsville Road, a major east-west corridor through the city, was closed for several hours Friday morning while crews worked to put out the fire and clean up the area.Â
