Arson ruled out in 84 Lumber fire that caused $1.5M in damage

Investigators ruled out arson as the cause of a fire that destroyed a Greenwood lumber warehouse Friday.

84 Lumber is a Pennsylvania-based lumber and building materials supplier with a location at 484 E. Worthsville Road, Greenwood. Early Friday, a massive fire ripped through one of its buildings on the 6.8-acre property, causing $1.5 million in damage, said Chad Tatman, spokesperson for the Greenwood Fire Department.

The fire department does not expect to determine the cause due to the significance of the damage, but investigators were able to rule out arson, Tatman said.

The building is too unstable to investigate further. The company will have to completely tear down the warehouse and build a new one, he said.

There were no injuries as no employees were inside the building at the time of the fire, Sarah Mellema, a spokesperson for the company, said last week.

The fire was contained to the main building. The back of the warehouse bore the brunt of the fire damage, and the rest of the facility has smoke and water damage, Tatman said. The lumber yard and sheds were not damaged, Mellema said.
