Police arrest man after he hits, chokes pregnant woman

Police arrested a Greenfield man after he hit and choked a woman who told police she was 20 weeks pregnant with twins.

Mikel Wayne Privett, 31, 18 Manor Drive, Apt. 4, was arrested on charges of domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a pregnant family or household member and strangulation, both Level 5 felonies; as well as possession of a schedule III controlled substance, a Level 6 felony.

The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Police responded at 10:48 a.m. Sunday to the report of a battery with injury at the Clary Crossing Apartments in Greenwood, according to a Bargersville Police Department report.

The victim told police Privett either punched or smacked her in the side of the head, causing her ears to ring and bleed, before he grabbed her with both hands and choked her.

"I felt my feet lifting off the ground," she wrote in a statement.

Earlier that morning, about 4 a.m., the victim woke up to loud banging on the apartment door. It was Privett. She answered the door, according to the report.

The victim told police a similar incident occurred last week when he "busted" her head, but she did not call police, and Privett had since moved out, the report said.

Privett fled the apartment Sunday. Police found his car nearby and stopped him at Demaree and Honey Creek roads, according to the report. He told police he had just left the apartment where the victim had attacked him during an argument.

He also told police he had Suboxone which was not prescribed to him in the car’s center console. Police found seven whole pills, the report said.

Privett was taken to the Johnson County jail where he was held on a $7,800 bond initially. He was released Monday after agreeing to a pretrial release program, according to online court records. A protection order was also issued, records show.
