Greenwood man arrested after firing shots at a vehicle

A man was arrested after police say he fired shots at a vehicle for cutting him off on Stop 18 Road in Greenwood.

James Popp, 29, of Greenwood, was arrested on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm.

The Greenwood Police Department responded to a call Sunday evening where a man reported that another man, later identified as Popp, had fired shots at his vehicle while they were both driving on Stop 18 Road, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

The man told police he thought he accidentally cut off Popp, who was driving a neon green motorcycle, and that made Popp angry, the report said. He said Popp then started closely following him, pulled up beside his car and banged on the side mirror while cursing at him.

He then pulled into the nearby gas station, and Popp followed him into the parking lot, the report said. Because of that, he did not stop his car and he decided to go back to Stop 18 Road.

Popp followed him again, driving close to the bumper of the car, which caused the man to swerve, the report said. Popp then pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the car and fired two shots, the report said.

Officers soon found Popp, who fit the description they were given, riding on his green motorcycle near Main and Meridian Streets in Greenwood. He was pulled over and arrested, the report said. Popp initially denied firing shots at a car at the time he was arrested, the report said.

During an interview at the police station, Popp told police he did fire shots at the man who called the police, the report said. He said he was angry at the man for cutting him off while driving, and he said he kept brake-checking him as he followed him, the report said.

Popp was booked into the Johnson County jail. He was released on $2,400 bond.Â
