House District 93 race mostly undecided

Republican John Jacob won the votes in Johnson County, but Marion County is still counting ballots.

Jacob came out with 67% of the votes in Johnson County. His challenger, Democrat Angela Elliott, won 33% of the county’s votes. District 93 includes a portion of White River Township in Johnson County, and the southside of Indianapolis.

Since a large part of District 93 rests in Indianapolis, final results were still unknown Tuesday night. In Marion County, teams of election officials started processing early ballots by 10 a.m. Tuesday. Officials said that by roughly 5 p.m., they had counted about 57,000 of the 213,612 votes cast early by mail and in person.

And officials had said key races were not expected to be decided on Election Night.

This was Jacob’s first time running for public office. He’s lived on the southside of Indianapolis his whole life, and previously worked as an auditor for the Indiana State Board of Accounts before starting a design firm with his wife a few years ago. Calling himself an underdog in this election, Jacob narrowly won the Republican nomination in the spring in a very close race against incumbent Dollyne Sherman.

Jacob is also heavily involved in Christian ministry with his wife, including marriage mentoring, street evangelism, ministering international students and completing mission trips.

Jacob’s primary platforms include ending abortion in Indiana and preventing government overreach, he said. If elected, Jacob plans to co-author the already-filed House Bill 1089, known as the “Protection of Life” bill, that would put an end to abortions in Indiana, he said.

“I would say abortion (is the biggest issue facing Indiana),” Jacob has said.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Jacob said the state legislature needs to pass pandemic-related legislation that does not violate people’s constitutional rights. He added that the executive branch — the governor’s office — should not be the sole body making pandemic-related decisions.

Jacob faced controversy in the final days of the election when old social media posts allegedly made by him resurfaced online. In the posts, he condemned the Roman Catholic Church and Islamic community.
