Swimming and diving

Trojans blow past Bull Dogs

Center Grove cruised to a sweep of Columbus North on Saturday, with the girls taking a 149-37 victory and the boys winning by a 123-62 margin.

The girls got two individual wins each from Lara Phipps (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Kiersten Smith (50 and 100 free), while Devin Trammell (200 IM), Mia Prusiecki (diving), Jessica Holland (500 free), Grace DeLuna (100 backstroke) and Maddy Howell (100 breaststroke) also finished first.

On the boys side, Ethan Martin (200 free, 100 fly) and Garrett Crist (IM, backstroke) were double winners, while Caleb Crady was first in diving and Connor Conkin took the 100 breast. Center Grove claimed all six relays.

Grizzly Cubs place third

Franklin’s boys and girls were third behind Chesterton and Zionsville in the Hall of Fame COVID-19 Classic. The Grizzly Cub boys got two wins apiece from Mac Ratzlaff (100 and 200 freestyle) and Cade Oliver (200 IM, 100 backstroke), who teamed with Anthony Ries and Ethan Pheifer to win the 400 freestyle relay. Drake Keller was first in diving.

The girls were led by Gracey Payne, who hit the wall first in both the 50 and 100 free and anchored the winning medley relay that also featured Allie Lacy, Kabria Chapman and Alea Hensley. Chapman also got a victory in the 100 breaststroke and Camy Quiggins was the winning diver.

Braves split three-way

Indian Creek’s boys remained unbeaten on the young season with wins over Beech Grove (81-16) and Martinsville (73-27) on Saturday. The Braves won all three relays and got individual victories from Joey Smith (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Garrett Bolin (500 free, 100 back), Evan Dennis (200 free) and Sam Smith (100 free).

The girls lost both duals but got a first-place effort from Ella Taylor in diving.

Trojans dominate in Bloomington

Center Grove swept the Bloomington North Invitational on Saturday, beating the host Cougars 81-0 and adding wins over Bloomington South (44-27), Columbus North (74-3) and Martinsville (64-9).

Eight different Trojans were a perfect 4-0 on the day: Michael LaRocca (106 pounds), Reese Courtney (113), Michael Tharpe (120), Kaden McConnell (126), Hayden Watson (145), Riley Rust (152), Drake Buchanan (182) and Owen Green (285).

Grizzly Cubs win in return

Kuryn Brunson scored 22 points and Megan Thompson added 20 as Franklin returned from an 18-day layoff with a 71-56 home win over Decatur Central on Saturday. The victory improved the Class 4A No. 11 Grizzly Cubs to 5-0 on the season.

Braves rout Greencastle

Led by 22 points from Lauren Foster, Indian Creek rolled past Greencastle on Saturday, 59-32. Kurstin Thompson posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Braves (5-3), while Faith Wiseman chipped in 11 points.

Boys basketball

Lancers stay perfect

Edinburgh kept its hot start going with a 61-57 home win over Waldron on Saturday. Caleb Dewey and Travis Jones paced the Lancers (4-0) with 16 and 15 points, respectively, with Riley Palmeter adding 11.

Trojans fall to Cougars

A cold shooting night doomed Center Grove to a 73-62 setback at Bloomington North. Landin Hacker scored 22 points in defeat for the Trojans (1-1), Tyler Cerny contributed 11 and Ethan Jones and Tayven Jackson added 10 each.

Grizzly Cubs suffer road loss

Franklin came up short at Seymour, 53-43. Damon Dickey led the Grizzly Cubs (0-2) with 17 points, 12 of those coming during a fourth-quarter comeback attempt, and Carson Hunter scored 11.

Auto racing

Clay repeats as season champion

Morgantown native Cory Clay finished atop the TQ midget points standings on the All Star Circuit of Champions for a second straight season. Clay drives for team owners Kevin and Becky Brown.

Clay, who collected 987 points during the pandemic-shortened season, also beat series owner Tony Stewart in a race at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds in Columbus this fall.
