PENSACOLA, FL

Dr. James Nalley, 76, of Pensacola, FL (formerly of Franklin) passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020.

Dr. Nalley or Jim which he preferred in non-professional settings, was born May 12, 1944 to Thomas and Mary Jane Nalley, one of eight children. He grew up in the Fountain Square area of Indianapolis. Dr. Nalley went on to graduate from St. Pat’s Grade School, Cathedral High School, Marion College and IU Medical School.

In 1969 Jim married Susan Nalley. They had four children, Jeff, Kristie, Ryan and Matthew. Jim is survived by his wife and dear friend of 51 years, Susan, his four children and 3 grandchildren and his only remaining sibling and loving sister, Kathy Nalley Schembra plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Shortly after receiving his degree in medicine, Jim and Susie moved to Franklin to be the third member of a Family Practice including Dr. Hugh Andrews and Dr. Paul Reynolds.

After several years in Family Practice, Dr. Nalley went back to school where he completed a residency in anesthesiology and then went on to practice his new profession at Johnson Memorial Hospital.

In addition to being an excellent physician, Jim was quite an adventurer. Jim convinced a couple of his Franklin buddies to join him on a ski trip to Snowmass Colorado. The annual – week long – Colorado ski trip became a 25 year ritual and grew from the original trio to eight of his Franklin friends.

One of the members of the Vail ski team and almost an expert skier was John Chiarotti, who passed away on November 30, only two days following Jim’s passing.

John was fortunate to live to be 75. Tony Gannon, one of the original trio and another alleged “expert skier” collided with John, who was standing still, down mountain, while Tony was flying down the mountain, and “showing off” for Jim who was videotaping each member’s run. Skies, poles and people went flying, but everybody was young and tuff and no-one was injured.

In 1981 Jim, Susie and their family moved to Pensacola, where Jim joined a large anesthesiology group, where he continued to practice until his retirement in 2018.

Dr. Nalley was a kind and generous Christian, who loved his family and his Church. Surely God had a special place for Jim, upon his arrival.

The family members held a private funeral in Pensacola and plan a Celebration of Jim’s Life this spring, hopefully when it will be more conducive for larger gatherings.
