College notebook: Burris a hit for UIndy softball

University of Indianapolis senior softball player Hanna Burris had two hits in a 2-0 decision over Cedarville. The Center Grove graduate added a single in a 6-3 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. The Greyhounds swept West Virginia State as Burris had a single, a home run and four RBIs in the first game and three singles and a steal in the second.

Center Grove

Franklin College pitcher Jackson Young worked the final three innings in a 12-7 loss to Manchester to open the baseball season. Young surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out two. In the second game, a 13-3 Grizzlies win, Chris Foote pitched the final inning, allowing a hit and striking out a batter. Young delivered three hits and drove in four in a 14-1 victory over Defiance.

Senior Tye Thixton helped Indiana Wesleyan sweep four games from St. Francis by delivering a total of eight hits, scoring seven runs and stealing two bases.

Morehead State pitcher Grant Herron picked up the save in a 13-10 decision over Marshall. Herron pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. He also recorded a save in a 12-9 win against Ohio, throwing a hitless final frame.

Cincinnati junior golfer Sam Jean placed third individually at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island, Georgia, with a 6-under par total of 210. Indiana senior Ethan Shepherd tied for 30th with a score of 218.

Taylor linebacker Sam Bolin had seven tackles in the football team’s 24-10 loss at St. Francis. Junior teammate Brad Boswell, a defensive lineman, was credited with a tackle.

Sophomore Erica Shepherd was named Duke’s Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the women’s golf team to a title at the Gamecock Intercollegiate. Shepherd carded a 7-under par total of 209 to earn her first individual collegiate championship.

Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 12 points and five rebounds a 67-58 loss at Purdue.

Junior defensive back Riley Roberts had five tackles for Rose-Hulman football in its 52-6 win over Defiance. Running back Alonzo Johnson carried the ball five times for the Engineers.

UIndy volleyball player Emma Jones had nine kills in the team’s 3-1 triumph over William Jewell and 10 kills and three digs in a loss to Truman State.

Indiana State volleyball picked up a 3-0 victory at Southern Illinois, with Ashley Eck recording eight digs and two services aces and Jamie Brown contributing two kills. The Sycamores then downed SIU in four sets, with Eck going for 13 digs.

Franklin

Concordia (Wisconsin) junior Logan Snyder has been named the NCAC Student-Athlete of the Week in men’s tennis for the second time in his career. Snyder is 3-1 so far this season in singles competition and 4-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Senior tennis player Jake Zachary won his No. 3 singles match for Franklin College against Wabash College, but lost at No. 2 doubles. The Grizzlies lost overall, 7-2.

Defensive back Tyce Miller had a tackle for Rose-Hulman football in a 52-6 defeat of Defiance.

Lipscomb volleyball won two matches at North Alabama, with freshman setter Brooke Phillips totaling 56 assists and 10 digs.

Greenwood

Center fielder T.J. Bass had a single, a home run and three RBIs in Taylor’s 14-2 win over Goshen. Bass also singled and scored a run in the nightcap, a 6-1 victory.

UIndy freshman softball player Dominique Proctor delivered a double in the team’s 7-0 defeat of West Virginia State.

Indiana’s Nick Willham lost both of his matches at 197 pounds at the Big Ten wrestling championships. Willham lost by scores of 7-1 and 4-0.

Greenwood Christian

Franklin College senior Krae Sparks pitched the first four innings of the team’s season-opening 12-7 loss to Manchester, allowing seven hits and striking out six.

Whiteland

Sophomore pitcher Luke Helton got the start in Morehead State’s 13-10 win over Marshall. Helton worked four frames, allowing four hits, walking three and recording a strikeout.

Indiana Wesleyan pitcher Danielle Munn surrendered three hits and struck out 10 in a 4-0 shutout of Point Park.

Franklin College freshman Zach Ricketts shot a career-low 74 in a home loss to Rose-Hulman to tie for third individually.

St. Francis women’s basketball player Sidney Crowe was named honorable mention for the All-Crossroads League team.

Indian Creek

Grace College senior pitcher Dori Knight took the loss in the team’s 1-0 loss to Madonna, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. Grace lost a 3-2 decision to Concordia (Michigan), with Knight allowing six hits in seven innings and striking out two.

Sophomore linebacker Isaiah Lacey had a tackle for St. Francis in a 24-10 win over Taylor.
