College notebook: Werner fans 15 in UIndy win

University of Indianapolis pitcher Reid Werner struck out 15 and yielded no walks in a complete-game performance to lead the baseball team to a 7-1 win over Truman. For the season, the former Greenwood player has pitched 30 innings and struck out 37 batters.

Greenwood

Jeffrey Reynolds helped the St. Francis men’s basketball team advance to the semifinals of the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City. He scored seven points, grabbed three boards and blocked three shots in an 89-81 quarterfinal win over Bethel and had 13 points and 10 rebounds in an 82-77 semifinal loss to Shawnee State.

Taylor baseball swept a doubleheader against Mount Vernon Nazarene, with T.J. Bass providing his team a single, double and home run in the first game. Bass added a single in the second outing and two singles in another 9-2 victory.

Sophomore Lexy Rees helped UIndy softball score two-game sweeps of both Tiffin and Lewis by totaling four runs scored, three RBIs and three hits, including two doubles. She scored one of her team’s runs in a 12-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan, while teammate Dominique Proctor singled and scored a run.

Franklin College tennis player Zach Lester won his match at No. 2 doubles as the team downed Kaskaskia College, 6-3. The Grizzlies women lost to Kaskaskia, 5-4, with Maecee Terhune winning her match at No. 2 doubles.

Volleyball player Alyssa Stilley had eight kills and two digs as Roosevelt won at Calumet in straight sets. She had three kills in a loss to St. Xavier.

Wabash College runner Ethan Pine finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:10.53 and sixth in the 800 in 2:02.79 as the Little Giants won the Early Bird at Rose-Hulman.

Greenwood Christian

Krae Sparks pitched the first four innings for Franklin College baseball in its 13-2 victory at Mount St. Joseph, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Whiteland

Branton Sanders contributed a run-scoring double and scored a run in Anderson’s 6-3 win against Earlham. The Ravens then swept a doubleheader from Bluffton, with Sanders having a triple and home run in the opener and scoring a run in the nightcap.

Franklin College men’s golf tied for fourth of 12 teams at the Mount St. Joseph Stateline Shootout in Cincinnati as freshman Zach Ricketts tied for 52nd individually with a score of 78-81—159.

Franklin

Vincennes men’s golf placed sixth at the Rend Lake Invitational. Sophomore Matt Jordan carded a 81-75—156 for the team’s second-lowest total.

Jake Zachary won his match at No. 2 doubles for Franklin College men’s tennis, but lost at the second singles spot in the Grizzlies’ 6-3 defeat of Kaskaskia College.

Concordia (Wisconsin) junior Logan Snyder won in doubles to provide his team its lone point in an 8-1 loss at Wheaton.

Indian Creek

Bethel men’s basketball made it to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City before falling to irival St. Francis, 89-81. Junior guard Jared DeHart scored 11 points, dished out six assists and made two steals for the Pilots.

Junior Sydney Logsdon netted a win at No. 5 singles for the Franklin College women’s tennis team in a 5-4 loss to Kaskaskia College.

Center Grove

UIndy men’s basketball player Ben Nicoson was named the team’s James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award recipient.

Wisconsin setter Madison Hammill finished with 46 assists and nine digs as the Badgers’ top-ranked volleyball team remained undefeated with a win at No. 4 Minnesota.

Indiana State freshman Ashley Eck provided her team eight digs in a loss against Valparaiso. The Sycamores then downed the Crusaders in four sets with Eck totaling 15 digs and three assists. Teammate Jamie Brown added three kills and two digs.

Wittenberg outfielder Clara Andersen had an RBI single in the Tigers’ 6-1 win at Hanover. Andersen is batting .350 and leads her team in RBIs (eight) and triples (two).

Hanna Burris scored a run as the UIndy softball squad blanked Tiffin, 10-0, in five innings. She belted a double and scored a run in 5-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Lewis and had a single and stolen base in an 8-0 triumph in the second game. Burris doubled and scored two runs in a 12-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan.

Indiana Wesleyan baseball won four straight games at Goshen as Tye Thixton went 7 of 14 at the plate in the series, scoring six runs. Nick Coy drove in two runs with a double as IWU downed Aquinas, 11-3.

Senior linebacker Sam Bolin had five tackles for the Taylor football team in a 17-14 overtime loss to Concordia (Michigan).

Cincinnati golfer Sam Jean tied for 52nd at the Schenkel Invitational with a three-round score of 227.

Duke women’s golf competed in the Big Four Challenge in Raleigh, North Carolina, with Erica Shepherd winning her match against North Carolina State and losing to her opponent from Wake Forest.

DePauw freshman Kathleen Ameis, a Greenwood resident, shot an 88 for the women’s golf team in a loss at Denison.
