David “Big Dave” Lowell Sutton

GREENWOOD, IN.

David “Big Dave” Lowell Sutton, 80 of Greenwood, IN passed away on March 27, 2021 in south Florida. David was born in Beech Grove, IN May 14, 1940, to Marion “Buss” and Martha (Webster) Sutton. After the death of his mother, David was raised by his father and devoted step-mother, Lillian (Schmidt) Sutton.

He graduated from Center Grove High School in 1959 and was a member of the football team. David married Minnie Pearl Barger on November 11, 1962 and lived in Smith Valley. Big Dave worked as a heavy equipment operator for various construction contractors and was a member of Local 103 – International Union of Operating Engineers, serving on the Hardship Committee.

Big Dave was a fan of NASCAR, enjoyed fishing and working on cars, but most importantly, watching Indiana University basketball. He would occasionally watch Purdue basketball, but only if there wasn’t an IU game. After retiring in 2005, Big Dave and Pearl enjoyed many years traveling and attending vintage car shows with their 1941 Plymouth Business Coupe “Beulah” and Sedan “Bertha”. Both were members of the Broke Bunch Car Club and attended the annual Frog Follies and Street Rod Nationals.

In addition to his wife, Big Dave is survived by his children David (Shala) Sutton of Mooresville, IN and Sandra (John) Herrin of Plantation, FL; four grandchildren, Martina Sutton, Matthew (Anastacia) Vick, William Vick, and Andrew Herrin; and three great-grandchildren.

Big Dave was preceded in death by his parents.

A service will be conducted on Wednesday April 7, 2021 at 2:30 P.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live streamed for family and friends to connect at www.swartzmortuary.com/obituary/david-sutton. Friends may call Wednesday April 7, 2021 from 12 Noon till service time at the mortuary. Facial coverings or mask and social distancing is required for those attending. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood, IN.
