Greenwood confirms $2.1M tax break for two warehouses

Greenwood’s city council confirmed its vote to give a developer a $2 million tax break to build two speculative buildings on the city’s northeast side.

Chicago-based CA Industrial Holdings plans to build two warehouses near County Line and Graham roads, which it intends to rent to logistics companies. The buildings would be 278,000 and 429,000 square feet, according to city documents.

The developer asked the city for a $2.1 million real property tax abatement, which the council also approved at its April 5 meeting by a vote of 7-2. Pendleton and Williams voted no.

The proposal came back to the council for a third time Monday night for a public hearing. The council confirmed the abatement by a vote of 6-3. This time, Bates, Pendleton and Williams voted no.

With the abatement, CA Industrial will pay $2.5 million in real property taxes over 10 years.

Just one Greenwood resident spoke against it.

Randy Goodin reiterated previous concerns about low wages the companies that rent the spaces may bring. He also expressed concerns the developer has not been clear about what benefits it would give to the city, he said.

“We have no idea what this developer is going to be bringing in,” Goodin said.

CA Industrial said it would invest $40.4 million in the project and bring 83 new jobs to the city, paying at least $18 and hour, according to city documents.
