Franklin, Greenwood advance in county tennis

Forced to wait a day for the start of the Johnson County girls tennis tournament, Greenwood and Indian Creek made sure to give fans their money’s worth on Thursday.

The Woodmen used a pair of three-set victories to pull out a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Braves in their opening-round match, earning a semifinal date with Center Grove on Saturday morning at Whiteland.

Franklin wasted little time getting past Edinburgh in their first-round showdown, dropping just two games overall in a 5-0 sweep of the visiting Lancers. The Grizzly Cubs will meet the host Warriors in the other Saturday semi.

Indian Creek got on the board first against Greenwood, with Lauren Foster picking up a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Marissa Linville evened it up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second singles for the Woodmen.

A win at first doubles from Emilee Scott and Olivia Perry got the Braves within a point of advancing, but Greenwood managed to stave off elimination. The No. 2 doubles team of Ava Stein and Maggie Boyce rallied from a set down to defeat Avery Burris and Addy Tunell by a 0-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 score, and Meri Yusef pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Lauren Lewis at third singles.

There was no such drama at Franklin, where the Grizzly Cubs easily moved on to the weekend.

Rylie Wilkison was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles for the Grizzly Cubs, who also got a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the second spot from Ailyn Hendricks and a 6-0, 6-0 win from Emma Williams in the No. 3 position.

In doubles, Franklin’s No. 1 tandem of Haylie and Chelsie Rayl cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. The No. 2 team of Haley Haldeman and Emma Sappenfield also won without losing a game.

Semifinal matches are slated to start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the championship to follow.
