Moore nominated for NFL honor

Center Grove coach Eric Moore was nominated by the Indianapolis Colts as one of 32 candidates for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.

Moore led the Trojans to a perfect season and a Class 6A state championship last fall, his third title run at the school. The NFL plans to announce a winner later this summer, with $12,500 going to the award recipient and $17,500 to that school’s football program.

Locals out of Boys State Junior

Six Johnson County golfers advanced to the match play portion of the Boys State Junior in West Lafayette before being eliminated from the tourney on Wednesday.

Sam Hord, who will be a senior at Center Grove, won his first-round match against Westfield’s Andrew White in 20 holes but had to withdraw from the second round due to injury. Fellow local competitors Jack Besner, Will Davis, Jack Kristel, Drew Rowen and Jackson Watkins were defeated in their opening-round matches.

Shepherd to play in Symetra event

Erica Shepherd, a Center Grove graduate set to enter her junior year at Duke University, received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Symetra Tour’s Donald Ross Classic, which begins today in French Lick and runs through Saturday.

This will be the first Symetra Tour appearance for Shepherd, who has played in a handful of other LPGA events, most recently in 2019.
