LaVon Carol (Bierman) Christmas

GREENWOOD

LaVon Carol (Bierman) Christmas 77 of Greenwood, IN went to inhabit her heavenly dwelling at 7:15pm on Thursday, September 30th. With her vibrant spirit she sparked joy and laughter among friends and family throughout her days on earth, and she will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting her. Every room she entered was brightened with her presence.

Born on July 22, 1944, she was the second of 10 children born to Marcellus Anthony Bierman and Irma Rose (Kruer) Bierman in Floyd Knobbs, Indiana. She grew up in Starlight, Indiana spending a lot of time farming and cooking for her family when she was not working on her schooling. She was a devout Catholic throughout her life, even following the rule of St. Benedict as a nun for 13 years. Her value for education was evident in her vocation of sculpting young minds as Sister Veronica at Our Lady of Grace Monastery. She left the convent at age 29 and married the love of her life, Clyde Leslie Christmas Jr., on June 30, 1973 at St. John’s United Church of Christ. She dearly loved her second vocation as a wife and mom of four; Christopher George Christmas, Clyde Rryan Anthony Christmas Jr., Cory David Christmas, and Casey Nicole (Christmas) Glover. Her home was the neighborhood gathering place where she mothered far more children than just her own. She always had Kool-Aid, popsicles, and snacks for all of the neighborhood kids, many of whom had nicknames for her.

The only thing LaVon liked being more than being a mom was being a Nana. She was blessed with four grandchildren, on whom she showered loads of love and affection; Blake Riley Glover (18), Jadyn Nicole Glover (15), Braylin Rae Glover (11), and Christopher Michael Christmas (10). This summer she inherited an additional three bonus grandchildren, Olivia Renee Malerich (17), Gaby Nicole Malerich (14), and Natalie Bridgette Malerich (13). Her grandkids frequently cringed at sleepovers as she repeatedly shouted, “Did you brush your teeth?” But she spoiled them all with birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, Starbucks, clothes and her famous Christmas cookies. The grandkids loved her fun loving spirit and warm affection. She has a sign in the kitchen that says, “What happens at Nana’s stays at Nana’s.” Her home was the center of numerous celebrations for her children and grandchildren, so there are countless adventures at Nana’s that will remain a mystery.

She had many gifts that she utilized outside the home, and they all involved serving others. Over the years she has catered meals, baked cakes and cookies, cleaned houses, and cared for the elderly in their homes as a home health aid. Once someone hired her they didn’t want to be cared for by anyone else. She was also a faithful member of Our Lady of Greenwood Church for several years where she was famously known for making the best Lemon Shake-ups at the yearly church festival. She gave her all in all that she did.

She is survived by her husband Clyde (74), her siblings; Sharon Bierman, Paula Carter, Donna Bierman, Bridget Kessinger, Georgina Dupaquier, Mark Bierman, Marcellus (Junie) Bierman, Brenda Bierman. She was preceded in death by her brother Doug Bierman and her parents, Marcellus and Irma. She is also survived by her children Christopher George Christmas and Amanda Michelle Christmas, Cory David Christmas and Agnieszka Sobolewska, Clyde Rryan Anthony Christmas Jr., Casey (Christmas) Glover and Brock Glover, and her grandchildren Blake, Jadyn, Braylin, Christopher, Olivia, Gaby, and Natalie.
