Center Grove schools will hold its next school board meeting entirely virtually.

A board work session will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and the regular meeting will take place at 7 p.m., both over Zoom.

The move to a virtual format comes after increasingly combative behavior from parents during recent school board meetings, officials said.

A board meeting in September, held in person at the Center Grove administration building, was delayed as several parents refused to wear masks despite a district-wide mandate. Center Grove officers requested the help of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the unmasked members of the audience left the meeting.

The only way to ensure a smooth meeting without interruption is to hold it virtually, Superintendent Rich Arkanoff said in a statement.

“The decision to move Thursday’s meetings to a virtual platform was made based on the disruptive behavior exhibited at the September board meeting,” Arkanoff said in the statement.

“The Board has important, time-sensitive business to conduct this month, including a vote on the corporation’s 2022 budget. Conducting the meeting virtually will ensure that all necessary business can be completed. The public will still be able to participate in the meeting via the webinar features in Zoom.”
