County’s unemployment rate lowest it’s been in years

The county’s unemployment rate broke a record in October, dipping to 1.9%, the lowest it has been in at least the past five years.

It marks the fourth consecutive month the unemployment rate has decreased in Johnson County. The jobless rate was 3.5% in June, 3% in July, 2.9% in August and 2.1% in September.

October’s rate was significantly better than the 4% jobless rate in October 2020, when many businesses were recovering from coronavirus pandemic-related lockdown measures.

Of 92 Indiana counties, just 16 had lower unemployment rates than Johnson County in October. The county’s jobless rate is also lower than the state’s rate of 2.5%.

Overall, more than 81,300 Johnson County residents had jobs last month, and less than 1,600 members of the eligible workforce did not.

The data comes from a monthly report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which tracks unemployment.

LaGrange County, in northeast Indiana, and Union County, in eastern Indiana, had the lowest unemployment rate at 1.5%. Howard County (Kokomo) and Lake County, in northwest Indiana, had the highest rate at 4.2%.
