Clark-Pleasant to demolish parts of Sawmill Woods building

Clark-Pleasant schools will pay to demolish most of the former Sawmill Woods building, while maintaining control of the property for future use.

The district’s preschool program moved to Clark Elementary School from Sawmill Woods last fall, vacating the New Whiteland building.

Companies that want to complete the partial demolition have until March 24 to submit bid applications, though there is no timeline for when the demolition will take place. The building’s three academic wings will be razed, but the cafeteria and gymnasium will remain in tact for future academic use, superintendent Patrick Spray said during a recent school board meeting.

Officials hope to approve a bid and begin demolition this spring, said Rick Hightower, a spokesperson for the district.

“The demolition will be for the three academic hallways and the main hallway that runs north and south,” Hightower said. “The future programs have not yet been defined, but we have discussed a community room and professional development space, potential location for summer child care programs, youth softball restrooms (and more). In the short term, the facility will be secured and not utilized.”
