License plate camera tips off sheriff’s office to man wanted for child molesting

New street cameras helped local police catch a man wanted for child molesting in Indianapolis.

A Flock license plate reader in the Center Grove area flagged the license plate of Tum Uk, who was wanted on a warrant out of Marion County.

Uk, 36, is charged with 10 counts of child molesting, as well as dissemination of matter harmful to minors, all felonies. A warrant was issued for his arrest on March 1, according to online court records.

“We want people to know we’re not using these cameras for surveillance or tracking purposes. We are only notified when wanted people or vehicles trigger the alert system and tell us what we would be able to see with our own eyes. It helps get people like this off the street,” Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

Deputies went to the 4100 block of W. Fairview Road in Greenwood to attempt to serve the warrant based off the Flock camera notification, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

While observing the house the suspect vehicle was parked at, deputies observed Uk take the trash out. Deputies made initial contact and identified Uk as a resident of the house, according to the report.

He was transferred to Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies without incident and is being held without bond at the Marion County jail, the report says.

An initial hearing is scheduled today, court records show.
