College notebook: Jean shines for Bearcats at tournament

Cincinnati men’s golfer Sam Jean helped the Bearcats to a runner-up finish at the 15-team Colleton River Collegiate tournament in Bluffton, S.C., by tying for sixth individually with a score of 71-70-68—209. Indiana placed seventh overall, with junior Noah Gillard tying for 18th individually at 72-71-71—214 and senior Ethan Shepherd tying for 64th at 79-76-72—227.

Center Grove

Jackson Young picked up the win with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings as Franklin College baseball defeated Hope, 18-6. Teammate Chris Foote pitched the final 1 2/3 frames, giving up no hits and fanning three.

Saint Leo first baseman Mike Wyman swatted a solo home run for the Lions in an 11-6 victory over visiting Minnesota Crookston.

Southern Indiana softball won four of six games in Winter Haven, Florida, and sophomore first baseman/catcher Lexi Fair finished the trip 9 for 18 with three home runs, a double and seven runs driven in.

Senior catcher Jordyn Rudd went 5 for 15 at the plate while driving in a total of eight runs as Northwestern softball won all five of its games at the Southern Illinois Invitational.

Wisconsin first baseman Abby Herbst drove in a run for the Badgers in a 7-3 tournament win at Colorado State.

Piper Belden delivered a single for the University of Indianapolis softball team in a 13-0 victory at West Virginia State.

Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks in a 69-67 loss at Purdue.

Vermont guard Emma Utterback had 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals in a 71-63 win over Binghamton in the quarterfinals of the America East women’s basketball tournament. The Catamounts lost to Albany in a semifinal, 67-54, with Utterback providing 16 points and seven assists.

The Bentley women’s basketball squad captured the Northeast 10 Conference tournament. Junior guard Ella Thompson had 10 points and seven boards in 57-47 semifinal win over Lemoyne and added five points and four rebounds in a 56-49 championship win over Stonehill.

Purdue women’s basketball lost to Michigan State in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament, 69-63, despite nine points and four boards from senior guard Cassidy Hardin.

Franklin

Kentucky freshman pitcher Izzy Harrison picked up her first college win, completing all six innings and striking out 10 in the Wildcats’ 9-1 victory over Kent State.

Whiteland

Freshman shortstop Macy Cornelius started the first four games for Mount St. Joseph softball in Florida, contributing seven hits — including three doubles — six runs scored and three stolen bases.

Addison Csikos drove in a run and scored one herself in Franklin College’s 11-6 triumph over Greenville in softball. She added a single and double in the Grizzlies’ 15-3 loss to the same team. Teammate Delanie Gourley picked up the win in an 11-3 defeat of Kalamazoo, allowing four hits and striking out one in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Indiana Wesleyan senior pitcher Danielle Munn worked the first three innings and struck out three in the Wildcats’ 11-0 win over Manchester. She improved her season record to 5-0 as IWU defeated South Carolina-Beaufort, 4-2.

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton worked the first 4 1/3 innings of a 6-4 loss to Eastern Michigan, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four.

Junior Carter Crowe finished with eight points and two rebounds for Franklin College men’s basketball as it lost at Illinois Wesleyan, 73-55, in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Greenwood

Lipscomb senior Hanna Anderson finished her indoor season with personal bests in the 200 (25.66) and 400 (57.74) meters as well as a share of the school record in the 4×400 relay (3:50.01). Anderson, who boasts a 4.0 GPA, was also named to the Atlantic Sun’s all-academic team.

The Taylor baseball squad won three of four games against Marian, with junior T.J. Bass driving in a total of seven runs and scoring five in the series while collecting a double and a home run.

Lexy Rees singled and drove in a run as UIndy softball swept a doubleheader against West Virginia State.
