Work on SR 135 Barnes Creek bridge to begin Monday

Residents in southwestern Johnson County should prepare for work on a State Road 135 bridge starting Monday.

Olympus Painting, a contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation, will start a $97,000 bridge painting contract on the State Road 135 bridge over Barnes Creek on or after Monday. The bridge is located between County Line Road and County Road 675 West in the southwestern part of the county, northeast of Morgantown, according to an INDOT news release.

Painting is one of several preservation techniques used by INDOT to extend the life of bridge structures. Prior to painting, beams and other components are sandblasted to remove existing rust and the new coat of paint acts as a sealant to protect from water, salt and other factors that may cause corrosion, according to the news release.

Traffic will be shifted and a 10-foot width limit will be in place while work is in progress. The department encourages drivers to use extra caution, avoid distractions and consider worker safety when traveling through active construction zones, the news release says.

The work is expected to be complete by the end of May, weather permitting, the news release says.
