Lennis Daniel Mitchell

August 11, 1952 – May 23, 2022

Lennis Daniel Mitchell, 69, passed peacefully at his home in Greenfield, Indiana, on Monday morning, May 23, 2022, now resting in the arms of Jesus after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s which claimed his earthly life.

Lennis was born in Franklin, Indiana August 11, 1952 to Barbara Louise (Allen) Mitchell and the late Lance Dale Mitchell of Trafalgar, IN.

Lennis graduated with honors from Indian Creek High School in Trafalgar. Because of his experience in farming and head for business, he went to Purdue University and pursued Agricultural Economics. He again achieved honors and graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. While at Purdue, he met the woman who would be his wife, Ellen Miller of Crawfordsville, IN. They married at First Christian Church in Crawfordsville on May 31, 1975.

While “Len,” as his beloved wife called him, worked at positions in Minneapolis and Indianapolis, his longest employment was with Eagle Creek Aviation as a Controller for 27 years until his celebrated retirement in December of 2017.

His interests included family first and then yard work, trains and model trains, boating, coin collecting, travel to Sedona, Arizona, Smokey Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico beaches in Florida. And of course, Len loved Bulldogs!

Growing up on the small Mitchell &Sons farm in Trafalgar, Lennis was involved as a leader in FFA (Future Farmers of America), and was a ten-year member of the 4-H Club, showing Polled Hereford cattle and winning numerous awards at county and state fairs. The Mitchell family love of music was also shared by Lennis who played the tenor saxophone throughout high school and as a member of the Purdue Marching Band.

Lennis was a lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), holding various positions of service, including Treasurer, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Pastoral Search Committee, and Board of Directors. He has held a membership with Greenfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Sertoma Club of Indianapolis.

Lennis was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Iliff and Oma Mitchell and maternal grandparents Roy and Marie Allen, as well as his father, Lance Dale Mitchell (January 16, 2022). Blessed with a large, loving extended family, those who live on with precious memories of Lennis are his mother, Barbara (Allen) Mitchell; wife Ellen L. (Miller) Mitchell; daughters Phaedra Ann (Mark) Hammons (Greenfield, IN), Lindsay Danielle Mitchell and spouse Jama Bradfield (Indianapolis, IN); grandson Austin Lee Hammons; siblings Janet Schantz, Bruce (Kim) Mitchell, Judy (Joe) Wells, and Jill (Allen) Whitehurst; sister and brother in law Carolyn (Miller) and Lionel Hart; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will occur on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at Greenfield Christian Church, which is located at 23 N. East Street. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. with the service following.
