Trojans, Grizzly Cubs excel
Led by a 69 from individual medalist Sage Parsetich, eighth-ranked Center Grove finished second in the Trojan Invitational at Hickory Stick on Saturday. The Trojans, who totaled 299 to finish nine strokes back of No. 1 Carmel, also got a 76 from Lexi Stuart, 77s from Camille Short and Rowen Pfeifle and 78 from Magnolia Miller.
Ninth-ranked Franklin, which was fourth in the 18-team field with a 314, was led by a 73 from Lexi Ray and a 74 from Reese Phillips. Center Grove’s White team, paced by Ellie Adkisson’s 79, was fifth with a 328.
Volleyball
Braves claim WIC opener
Indian Creek picked up a 25-9, 25-18, 25-14 victory at West Vigo on Saturday. Memoree Weekley had eight kills and five blocks for the Braves (2-2, 1-0 WIC), while Gabie Francis totaled six kills and Mattie Key and Kylie Lemmon each contributed five.
Lancers take three of four
Edinburgh won matches against North Harrison, Paoli and host Henryville in round-robin play, losing only to Hauser in a battle that went the full three sets. Gracie Crawhorn had 24 kills and MacKenzie Bieker added 22 for the Lancers (7-2).
Trojans fall in four sets
Center Grove took the first set but wound up on the losing end of an 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 score against New Castle. The Trojans drop to 4-3 on the season.
Boys tennis
Whiteland claims invitational
Host Whiteland beat Castle, North Posey and Linton-Stockton to win its own invitational on Saturday. Carson Baumann had three singles wins for the Warriors (4-3), while Chase Koester and Gavin Stubbe each went a perfect 3-0 in doubles.
Braves win tourney title
Indian Creek defended its crown at the Warren Central Invitational, claiming a pair of matches. Brendan Conner and Grant Dalton were unbeaten on the day at second and third singles for the Braves, while Aiden Pemberton and Landon Sichting were 2-0 at No. 1 doubles and Trent Volz and Aaron Spurgeon were perfect in the No. 2 spot.
Woodmen lose to Patriots
Greenwood suffered a 4-1 setback against Terre Haute North. Noah Paswater picked up the lone point for the Woodmen (3-2) with a three-set victory at first singles.
Lancers drop a pair
Edinburgh lost to host Connersville, 5-0, and to Hagerstown, 3-2. Max Blandford and Austin Brockman each picked up a singles win in the latter match for the Lancers.
Cross country
Braves sweep home meet
Indian Creek’s boys and girls dominated their own invitational meet on Saturday, winning with respective scores of 26 and 30 points. Libby Dowty was the individual winner on the girls side with a time of 18:49, followed closely by Abby Fleetwood (third) and Phoebe Dowty (fifth). In the boys race, Luke Neibert was second overall, while Jackson Neibert and E.J. Wooke placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Grizzly Cub girls third
Franklin’s girls placed third behind Cathedral and Westfield at the Plainfield Relays, totaling 25 points. Lauren Klem and Ava Ott teamed up to finish fourth overall, while Amelia Tisdale and Ainsley Botkin were seventh. Greenwood was seventh as a team, led by the duo of Makena Cruse and Lily Rollings (10th).
Girls soccer
Warriors dominate Cougars
Whiteland cruised to a 7-1 victory over Greenwood Christian on Saturday. Emma Gill scored three goals for the Warriors (1-2), while Bethany Floyd tallied a pair and Alexa LaPorte and Ella Proctor each found the net once.
Woodmen battle to draw
Kendyl Farmer scored once in each half to help Greenwood finish in a 2-2 tie with Covenant Christian. Bre Wheatley made nine saves for the Woodmen (1-0-1).
Grizzly Cubs blanked by Marauders
Franklin wound up on the wrong end of a 5-0 score against Mt. Vernon, falling to 1-3 on the young season.
Boys soccer
Trojans grab win, tie
Host Center Grove came away from Saturday’s Trojan Classic with a 2-2 tie against Castle and a 4-1 victory over Columbus East. The Class 3A No. 12 Trojans (2-1-1) got goals from Ely Detty, Landen Montfort, Caden York, Matheus Gubert, Bawi Hmung and Evan Shirer.
Franklin College
Johnson named women’s hoop coach
Franklin College alumna Jessica Johnson, who spent last season as an assistant at Marian, was named the head women’s basketball coach at her alma mater. Johnson had previously coached high school teams at Clinton Prairie, Martinsville and Perry Meridian.
