College notebook: Piercefield’s 29 points lead IWU to win

Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball split its two games at the CL/WHAC Challenge in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Senior guard Spencer Piercefield led the NAIA No. 5 Wildcats with 29 points and seven assists in a 89-83 victory over Cornerstone. The former Center Grove player also had 12 points and seven rebounds in the squad’s 61-59 loss to No. 5 Indiana Tech.

Center Grove

Vermont senior co-captain Emma Utterback has been named preseason All-America East Conference in women’s basketball. The guard averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists last season.

Setter Madison Hammill finished with 21 assists, eight digs and a kill as the ninth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team defeated visiting Minnesota in four sets.

Eckerd College lost its match at Embry-Riddle despite the 20 digs and four assists of sophomore Ashley Eck, who then helped lead a victory at Rollins with her 10 digs, four assists and two service aces.

Freshman Katie Egenolf produced seven kills and a dig for Ball State volleyball in its 3-0 sweep of host Miami (Ohio).

Indiana State junior Jamie Brown had seven kills and two digs in a loss at Valparaiso, and three kills in the team’s loss at UIC.

DePauw sophomore receiver Trent Veith caught two passes for a total of 33 yards as the Tigers won at Kenton, 58-33. Teammate Dane Young, a defensive back, had six tackles and broke up two passes.

Indiana Wesleyan freshman Daniel Weems carried eight times for 22 yards, and caught three passes for 24 yards as the NAIA No. 5 Wildcats defeated Siena Heights, 22-6.

Ball State running back Carson Steele ran the ball 29 times for 192 yards and a touchdown as the Cardinals won at Kent State, 27-20.

Junior tackle Lucas Hunter finished with three tackles for Indiana State in its 49-7 loss at South Dakota State.

Senior linebacker Riley Roberts finished with five tackles and his third interception in as many games as Rose-Hulman pounded visiting Defiance, 76-35.

Greenwood

Junior cross country runner Mallory Watson earned honorable mention All-HCAC after leading Franklin College to a third-place finish at the conference meet in Bluffton, Ohio. Watson placed 17th individually in a time of 25:04.6.

Linebacker Gavin Ruppert continued his outstanding freshman season for Wabash College, registering 16 tackles as the Little Giants defeated visiting Hiram College, 59-23.

Taylor women’s basketball player Quinn Kelly saw six minutes of court time, missing a pair of 3-pointers, in the team’s 81-51 victory over Madonna University.

Wheeling (West Virginia) University volleyball won in straight sets over Notre Dame College and Bluefield State College, with freshman Melia Gorrell contributing 15 and nine digs, respectively.

Greenwood Christian

Sophomore Izzy Reed scored four points, collected six rebounds, dished four assists and had two steals for IWU women’s hoops as it opened the season with a 96-56 defeat of visiting Indiana East.

Whiteland

Franklin College freshman Abby Eads ran a time of 29:36.7 as the women’s cross country squad placed third in the HCAC meet at Bluffton.

Indiana East guard Megan Harlow had three points, three boards and a steal in the team’s 96-56 loss at NAIA No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan.

Freshman defensive back Quinn Warweg intercepted a pass and returned it for 24 yards for Butler football in its 56-20 victory over visiting Morehead State.

Franklin

Franklin College men’s cross country was runner-up at the annual HCAC meet in Bluffton, Ohio. Eli Cochrane (27 minutes, 22.3 seconds), Wyatt McCullough (28:21.6), Drew McGaha (29:05.6) and Brayden Devenport (32:40.8) all competed for the Grizzlies.

Ball State linebacker Clayton Coll led the team in tackles with 13 as the Cardinals posted a 27-20 victory at Kent State.

Senior defensive back Tyce Miller intercepted a pass for Rose-Hulman in its 76-35 defeat of visiting Defiance.
