Greenwood student saved by staff members

A Greenwood eighth-grader’s life was saved by the quick actions of school officials last week.

An unidentified Greenwood basketball player needed immediate medical attention after they collapsed during basketball practice on Friday afternoon, officials from Greenwood Community Schools said Tuesday morning.

Coaches and school staff members were able to quickly administer CPR and use a defibrillator to save the student’s life. Doctors were later able to determine the student had a previously unknown heart condition, officials said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the quick and heroic action of our coaches,” a statement from the school district said.

The situation was very difficult for everyone involved. Because of this, officials say they will not be sharing the name of the student or coaches at this time in order to respect their privacy.

An online fundraiser has been set up by the Greenwood Education Foundation to help the student’s family with medical expenses. Nearly $3,000 has been been raised, with the goal set at $5,000.
