GCA girls basketball rolls to semifinal win

There’s no better time for Greenwood Christian to be playing its basketball of the season.

On Friday, the Cougars scored a 40-15 decision over Central Christian in the night’s second Class A sectional semifinal to move into tonight’s championship game against host Eminence (16-6).

GCA enters play riding a three-game win streak and is 6-18 overall.

“I am so very proud of this team,” first-year Cougars coach Tiffany Clements-Smith said. “We play a very tough schedule, and we knew the wins would be few and far between.

“But this team has grown so much since the beginning of the season. Things are starting to click, and they just don’t look like the inexperienced team we were.”

The Cougars led at halftime, 22-10, and through three quarters, 27-14.

No player scored in double figures for Greenwood Christian, but Ellie Sloan and Addie Jolley were close with nine points apiece. Junior guard Sydney Waldron and Izzy Cameron each added five for the Cougars, who had nine different players score at least two points.

“Honestly, what won this game for us was our bench,” Clements-Smith said.
