College notebook: Pheifer shines for BSU swimming at Valpo

Sophomore Ethan Pheifer won the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.62) as Ball State men’s swimming won at Valparaiso, 155-99, to conclude the regular season. The Franklin graduate also took swam on the second-place 200 medley relay (1:36.63) and was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.70).

Franklin

Sophomore Drew McGaha finished third in the 800-meter run for Franklin College in 1 minute, 59.4 seconds at the Mrs. G indoor track and field invitational. He was also part of the Grizzlies’ third-place effort in the 4×400 relay, which ran a 3:34.32 and included junior Eli Cochrane.

Radford freshman guard Ashlyn Traylor had seven points and three rebounds in the team’s 60-48 loss at Winthrop. She had six points and three boards in a 70-48 loss at Gardner-Webb.

Center Grove

Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis placed seventh at the NAIA National Indoor Championships with a win over Kansas Wesleyan. Senior Trey Thixton won both at No. 1 doubles and No. 5 singles.

Indiana Wesleyan baseball earned a 6-4 win at Georgia Gwinnett. Sophomore pitcher Drue Young got the start for IWU, allowing five hits and striking out four in 4 1/3 innings.

Senior first baseman Mike Wyman contributed two hits, three runs and two runs batted in as St. Leo’s baseball team got off to a 1-3 start.

Freshman swimmer Ben Clarkston helped Ball State close its regular season with a 155-99 triumph at Valparaiso, competing for the third-place 200 medley relay (1:36.68) and finishing third in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.81) and 200 backstroke (1:59.56).

The Indiana men’s golf team started its spring season by placing third at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Palm Coast, Florida. Senior Noah Gillard won his match, 2-up, against Michigan, and won 8 and 7 against Minnesota.

Junior Alex Heck finished with scores of 75, 78 and 81 to tie for 43rd individually as the St. Leo men’s golf team finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Matlock Collegiate Classic.

Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and five blocks to lead Indiana over top-ranked Purdue, 79-74. He had 20 points, 18 boards and six assists in a 66-60 win over visiting Rutgers.

Redshirt freshman guard Landin Hacker had four points, one assist and a steal in Bellarmine’s 71-64 win over visiting Jacksonville State.

Indiana Wesleyan guard Spencer Piercefield had three points and two assists as the Wildcats won at Bethel, 96-83. He had 18 points and three rebounds in IWU’s 71-65 victory over visiting Taylor.

Senior guard Emma Utterback had 10 points, seven assists and four steals for Vermont women’s basketball in its 53-49 win over visiting Albany. She then added 17 points in a 68-60 triumph over Maine.

Truman State guard Claire Rake scored nine points, six rebounds and three assists in an 82-54 victory at McKendree.

Bentley senior Ella Thompson had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists as the Falcons won at Adelphi, 74-70.

Purdue guard Cassidy Hardin scored four points and grabbed three rebounds in the team’s 69-46 home loss to Indiana.

Whiteland

Southern Indiana men’s tennis player Quinten Gillespie won his match at No. 3 doubles, but lost at No. 4 singles in the team’s 6-1 loss to Dayton.

Senior Carter Crowe scored 13 points and had four rebounds and four assists for Franklin College men’s basketball in its 77-58 loss at Anderson. He added nine points in a 98-62 setback at Hanover.

Manchester sophomore guard Logan Willoughby had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in a 69-50 victory over Mount St. Joseph. He scored 18 points in a 93-92 loss to Rose-Hulman.

Greenwood

Franklin College senior Nick Patton placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.16 seconds at the Mrs. G Invitational. The Grizzlies women’s 4×400, which included Mallory Watson, finished eighth in 4:38.88.

University of Indianapolis sophomore Emily Bonser took fourth in the weight throw with a best of 14.66 meters at the Blue-White indoor track and field Classic at Indiana State.

Sophomore Ethan Gray was part of Indiana Wesleyan’s lineup at the NAIA National Indoor Championships. The Wildcats finished seventh, with Gray dropping matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 singles in IWU’s 4-2 win over Kansas Wesleyan.

Taylor freshman Quinn Kelly scored four points in the women’s basketball squad’s 90-57 home loss against Indiana Wesleyan.

Center Gavin Dowling had two points, five boards and three assists as Anderson men’s hoops scored a 77-58 home win against Franklin College. He had 19 points and five rebounds in AU’s 102-84 victory over visiting Defiance.

Indian Creek

Sophomore Luci Woodrum took eighth in the mile run in 5:38.60 as Marian women’s track and field took part in the Indiana Wesleyan Classic.

Greenwood Christian

Wabash College’s 76-75 home win against Ohio Wesleyan included three points and a team-high six rebounds from junior forward Champ McCorkle. Champ added seven rebounds in a 68-61 loss at Denison, with Styles McCorkle scoring two points.

Indiana Wesleyan sophomore Izzy Reed scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in her team’s 90-57 victory at Taylor.

Roncalli

Led by the 20 points of sophomore guard Maddie Bischoff, the Ball State women’s basketball team downed visiting Kent State, 80-71. The Greenwood resident also scored five points in BSU’s 68-50 win at Eastern Michigan.
