A Nineveh man is in stable condition after being shot by state troopers Monday morning in Southport.

Indiana State Police troopers were attempting to locate Christopher Crouch, 36, of Nineveh, around 10:08 a.m. Monday when they were involved in an exchange of gunfire with him. Troopers were looking for Crouch because he was wanted on several felony warrants, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Preliminarily, investigators say troopers were looking for Crouch at a Quality Inn near McFarland Boulevard and Southport Crossing Drive. While there, a trooper saw Crouch coming out of a room and into a hotel hallway, before he then ran for the exit with a trooper in pursuit, the news release says.

Outside the hotel, Crouch got into a white car and drove away as another trooper pursued him. He was able to drive a short distance before driving over a curb, over an embankment into a pond on Southport Crossing Drive, police say.

After Crouch crashed into the pond, he got out of the car and ran south. A trooper was chasing Crouch on foot when he came to the edge of a second pond and stopped.

Crouch allegedly had a gun in his hand at this point, and the trooper gave several commands to drop the weapon. There was then an exchange of gunfire, police say.

Once the gunfire ceased, troopers gave medical aid to Crouch, who had an injury consistent with a gunshot wound. Paramedics were called to the scene and troopers continued medical aid until they arrived. He was then transported to an area hospital where he is listed in stable condition, according to ISP.

Investigators are still on the scene collecting evidence from the incident. The evidence will be submitted to a crime lab for further analysis.

It was also determined the white car Crouch used to flee from police was stolen from Terre Haute on Feb. 24, police say.

According to Indiana MyCase, Crouch is wanted on two Marion County warrants. One is a level 6 felony charge of possession of narcotics filed on Jan. 28. He was also wanted for two level 6 felony charges filed on Feb. 07: identity deception and resisting law enforcement using a vehicle.
