Here’s the latest on I-69 construction on the southside

Construction season is ramping up in and near Johnson County as crews march toward the completion of Interstate 69.

Commutes on Southport Road and State Road 37 will look different this week as workers continue preparing for the completion of an interchange there. Drivers can no longer access State Road 37 from Old Southport Road and access to State Road 37 from Banta Road in Marion County will be removed later this week, according to a weekly construction update from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

During the first seven-day closure, which started Sunday, the Southport Road on-ramp to northbound State Road 37 will remain closed, but the following movements will be open:

• S.R. 37 northbound to Southport Road (temporary pavement)

• S.R. 37 southbound to Southport Road

• Southport Road to S.R. 37 southbound

The southbound State Road 37 on-ramp from Southport Road now includes a temporary traffic signal so drivers can enter State Road 37 safely, INDOT officials say.

Drivers should remain cautious at the intersection of Waverly Park Road and State Road 144 just west of the Johnson County line in Morgan County, as workers continue to construct a roundabout that will likely open in late June. Trucks will be entering and exiting I-69 in Johnson and Marion counties and moving crews will be present on the shoulders and median in Morgan and Johnson counties throughout the warmer months, INDOT officials say.

Construction crews are continuing work to upgrade the Interstate 465 overpass above Harding Street, and are removing the existing bridge. The work will cause nightly 20-minute stoppages on Harding Street between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., INDOT officials say.

The most current information about closures and restrictions can be found at 511in.org or INDOT’s TrafficWise app.
