College notebook: Hill helps Trine softball capture Division III title

Debbie Hill is a national champion.

A freshman pitcher/designated player for the Trine softball team, Hill doubled, homered and drove in two runs as the Thunder downed Coe, 4-1, to advance to the NCAA Division III softball championship series. The Whiteland graduate was also the winning pitcher, striking out 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Hill took the loss in the opener of the final series, giving up three runs in her inning of relief in a 4-2 setback against Salisbury.She batted cleanup during Trine’s championship-clinching 1-0 victory in the third and deciding game between the teams.

Center Grove

The Indiana University baseball team finished its season with a 43-20 record after losing two of three games at top-seeded Kentucky in an NCAA regional. Feshman second baseman Tyler Cerny finished with a total of two singles in the Hoosiers’ four postseason games.

Sophomore Sam Slaughter wass one of four Marian golfers named an NAIA Scholar Athlete for the 2022-23 season. In order to be nominated, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
