Memorial fund set up, flags to be lowered in Deputy Guyer’s honor

A memorial fund has been set up to support the family of Johnson County Deputy Tim Guyer through the Central Indiana Police Foundation.

Guyer, 49, of Trafalgar, was well-known throughout the town and beyond as a man of faith, family man, youth sports coach, building inspector and business owner. He was sworn in as a sheriff’s deputy in December and died Tuesday after he was found unresponsive in his dorm room at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield. He was two weeks away from graduating from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Indiana State Police detectives are investigating his death, and preliminarily believe he died of a medical issue. Guyer leaves behind a wife and four kids, who he cared deeply for, his friends said.

From Guyer’s interview for the job and his work at the academy, it was clear he was ready and excited to take on the job. Guyer had never done police work before but felt called to take on the job, sheriff’s office officials say.

Donations to Central Indiana Police Foundation’s memorial fund are in support of his family to prop up their income during this period of loss. Tax-deductible donations can be made online at https://cipf.foundation/memorial-fund-for-deputy-tim-guyer/.

Guyer is being laid to rest Tuesday in a semi-public funeral with minimal law enforcement traditions. Under his family’s wishes, the public can attend to pay respects but the media will not cover the funeral.

Gov. Eric Holcomb has directed flags to be flown at half-staff in Johnson County in honor and remembrance of Guyer from sunrise to sunset Tuesday.

All businesses and residents in Johnson County are asked to lower their flags to half-staff to honor his life and service.
