Excessive Heat Warning extended into Friday night

The National Weather Service has extended an Excessive Heat Warning into Friday night for Johnson County.

The Excessive Heat Warning will be now be in effect until 8 p.m. Friday after previously being set to expire at midnight Friday morning. Heat index values up to 116 degrees are expected, the weather service says.

Meteorologists encourage the public to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, the weather service says.

People should also know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, officials say.
