Shepherd advances in Q School

Center Grove graduate Erica Shepherd successfully navigated Stage I of the LPGA/Epson Tour qualifying tournament, shooting a 4-under-par 68 on the Mission Hills Dinah Shore Course on Thursday to finish fifth with a four-round total of 276 (-12). Shepherd had birdies on two of the first three holes and immediately erased an eighth-hole bogey with another bird on No. 9; she played a bogey-free back nine in 2 under.

The top 95 players plus ties will play in Stage II of the qualifying series — often referred to as Q School — which will be held in Venice, Florida in October.

GCA wins three-way match

Taylor Harris was medalist with a 43 as Greenwood Christian posted a team score of 194 to comfortably defeat Monrovia and Edinburgh. Izzy Richardson (49) and Macie Blandford (50) led the Lancers in a losing effort.

Boys tennis

Grizzly Cubs nip Falcons

Chase Alyea’s 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph at third singles lifted Franklin past Perry Meridian on Thursday, 3-2. Nathan Neville won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for the Grizzly Cubs, with Jaxson Doddridge and Luke Sherry doing the same at second doubles.

Braves sweep Jets

Indian Creek improved to 11-0 on the year with a 5-0 victory over Hauser. Peyton Strunk, Grant Dalton and Aaron Spurgeon took the three singles points for the Braves, Trent Volz and Landon Sichting won at first doubles and the No. 2 pair of Mason Frische and Nick Winters also came out on top.

Warriors fall to Bull Dogs

No. 17 Whiteland suffered a 5-0 home loss against No. 3 Columbus North. Carson Baumann took his match to three sets at No. 2 singles for the Warriors (7-2).

Edinburgh comes up short

Despite singles points from Austin Brockman at No. 1 and Bailey Totten at No. 3, Edinburgh took a 3-2 loss against Southwestern.

Boys soccer

Trojans rout Cardinals

Ely Detty scored twice as Class 3A No. 8 Center Grove rolled to a 4-1 win over Southport on Thursday. Nalen Whitney and Evan Hewitt also scored for the Trojans, while Matheus Gubert had two assists.

Warriors lose to Orioles

Whiteland suffered a 3-0 setback at the hands of Avon Thursday night.

Girls soccer

Cougars blank Attucks

Hope Schmidt netted her first varsity goal on her birthday during Greenwood Christian’s 3-0 victory over Crispus Attucks on Thursday. Norah Herndon and Reagan Willis also found the net for the Cougars.

Woodmen overwhelm Southport

Joelle Young’s hat trick helped power Greenwood past Southport, 6-1. Nataly Quintero tallied two goals and Makena Cruse one for the Woodmen, while Bre Wheatley made seven saves in goal.

Volleyball

Lancers defeated in five sets

Edinburgh dropped a tough five-set battle with Southwestern on Thursday, 25-21, 14-25, 28-26, 18-25, 15-13. MacKenzie Bieker had 11 kills and 11 blocks for the Lancers, while Kenna Streeval pulled up 43 digs and Kyah Streeval handed out 33 assists.

Braves sweep Bulldogs

Indian Creek topped Monrovia 25-20, 25-15, 25-17. Gabie Francis had seven kills and four aces for the Braves, with Faith Wiseman contributing eight kills and five blocks. On the back row, Kendall Eden totaled 23 digs and Mattie Key 20.
