Local teachers can enter earthquake safety video competition

State officials are hosting an earthquake safety video competition for schools.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Get ShakIN’ video contest is continuing through the month of October. The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut on Oct. 19 offers teachers the chance to educate students about earthquake preparedness and the risks that Hoosiers face, according to an IDHS update.

Sitting close to two seismic zones — both with the potential of producing major quakes — Hoosiers need to “Get ShakIN’” when it comes to earthquake preparedness, state officials say.

Awareness and preparedness are the goals of the IDHS Get ShakIN’ video contest for schools. A winning class will receive an “Indiana Earthquake Day” at their school, or at the State Emergency Operations Center in Indianapolis. This includes giveaways and a visit by the Quake Cottage earthquake simulator, if available, state officials said.

The contest ends Oct. 31. The Indiana Earthquake Day for the contest winner will be scheduled at a convenient time for both the school and IDHS staff.

Student groups or classes can enter the competition by submitting a student-produced video on earthquake preparedness and/or safety. A panel of IDHS judges will select the overall winner, state officials say.

Additional information about the video contest and videos from previous winners are on the Get ShakIN’ webpage at on.in.gov/get-shakin.
