Zane Matthew Hennig

GREENWOOD, IN

Zane Matthew Hennig, 27 of Greenwood, IN passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023.

He was born October 11, 1995, in Indianapolis, IN to Matthew E. and Beth A. (Bishop) Hennig.

Zane was a 2014 graduate of Greenwood Community High School and attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.

He was a United States Army Veteran having served in South Korea having obtained the rank of Corporal. Zane received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Service Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon.

After his military career, Zane became a patrol officer for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department from 2019 until 2021 and then the Greenwood Police Department from May 2021 until August of 2023.

Zane sponsored in giving bicycles away to children who otherwise were unable to have one.

He was an avid outdoorsman. Zane was on the fishing team at Indiana State University and competed in several tournaments around the country. He loved to mushroom hunt in the spring and would walk for miles in search of the elusive morel, deer hunting in the fall was a passion and he would spend countless hours waiting on that prize buck to present itself to him. Zane was also an amazing musician; he could rock a drum kit beyond his years at the age of 15 and could have taken that further but instead chose to embark on his military career. He was born into a Chicago Cub and Chicago Bears family, and he stayed true to the tradition. The 2016 Cubs World Series was a special time for him. Other interests were collecting various things from shark teeth, baseball and football cards to western hats. Zane was also a very astute weather chaser, and his police friends affectionately called him “Radar”.

Survivors include his fiancé Kelsey D. Gibson of Greenwood, IN, his two daughters Palmer Rae Hennig and Charlotte Mae Hennig both at home, his parents Matthew E. and Beth A. (Bishop) Hennig of Greenwood, IN, his sister Hannah M. Hennig of Greenwood, IN, paternal grandfather Clifford Hennig of Indianapolis, IN, Kelsey’s parents Linda S. Gibson of Franklin, IN and Kevin J. Gibson of Franklin, IN, several aunts, uncles, cousins and his fur babies Zarah, Willow and Harlo.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Cecilia (Mullen) Hennig, maternal grandparents Dean and Barbara (Joslin) Bishop.

Pastor Richard Jenkins and Pastor Andrew Stanley will conduct a service on Wednesday October 18, 2023 at 11AM at Emmanuel Church Greenwood Campus 1640 West Stones Crossing Road Greenwood, IN 46143 with full military honors being conduct by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Friends may call Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 3PM until 8PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and from 9:30 AM until service time at the church.
