Volleyball

Cougars win first title since 2016

Greenwood Christian won a Class A sectional championship for just the second time in its history on Saturday, rallying to defeat host Indianapolis Lutheran in a five-set semifinal before sweeping Eminence in the title match, 25-10, 25-10, 25-9.

The Cougars (22-13), who stormed back from two sets down against the Saints to earn a 21-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-8 triumph, will face Oldenburg Academy in a regional semifinal at Edinburgh this Saturday. GCA beat the Twisters in a two-set tournament match on Oct. 7, Oldenburg’s lone loss in its last 10 matches.

Braves fall in sectional semifinal

Indian Creek saw its season come to an end with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-21 defeat at the hands of host Northview in a Class 3A sectional semifinal on Saturday. The Braves finish the year with a 19-5 record.

Royals roll to sectional crown

Class 4A No. 3 Roncalli easily laid claim to its 31st sectional championship on Saturday, finishing the task with three-set sweeps of Pike and Perry Meridian. Logan Bell totaled 32 kills and 14 digs for the Royals, who will face Avon in a regional semifinal at Greenfield-Central this coming Saturday.

Franklin College

Swimmers, divers compete in DIII meet

Franklin College took part in the Indiana DIII Invitational at Wabash College, with the women’s team finishing second and the men fourth.

Samantha Phillips was a triple winner for the Grizzly women, taking the 200-yard butterfly and the 200 and 500 freestyles. Also hitting the wall first were Carley Bond (1- and 3-meter diving), Kat Lundy (100 and 200 backstroke), Petal Sloan (50 and 100 free), Caileigh McCafferty (200 individual medley) and Landi Newcomb (100 butterfly).

The men got individual victories from Zachary Jackson-Blaine (50 and 100 freestyle), Will Johnson (100 IM), Jack Burke (100 fly) and Cam Baker (3-meter diving).

Women’s soccer throttles Defiance

Celebrating its senior day, Franklin College tallied three goals in each half of a 6-0 home rout of Defiance on Saturday. Maddison Claybrooke scored twice in the second half for the Grizzlies (3-6-6, 2-2-2 HCAC), who also got goals from Adex Bixler, Jetta Norris, Lauren Barker and Katleyn Duff.

Men’s soccer ties Yellow Jackets

Franklin College battled Defiance to a scoreless draw in a Saturday home match. Ian Rowe made four saves to preserve the deadlock for the Grizzlies (3-7-4, 2-2-2 HCAC).

Cross country wraps regular season

Franklin College finished out its regular-season schedule Saturday at the Augustana Interregional Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois. The Grizzlies were 31st of 42 teams on the men’s side, with John Asplund their top individual finisher, while Haley Makowski paced the women on the way to a 37th-place team showing.
