Greenwood Amazon facility evacuated due to smoke; no injuries

No one was injured after firefighters responded to smoldering cardboard at an Amazon warehouse in Greenwood.

The Greenwood Fire Department was called to an Amazon warehouse at 1151 S. Graham Road at 8:42 a.m. Monday on a report of a structure fire. A 911 caller had reported that an auger was smoking. An auger is a component of a dumpster used to push its contents to the back of it, similar to how a trash compactor works, according to a Greenwood Fire Department news release.

The alarm company for the facility reported a fire alarm had also been pulled, according to the news release.

Shortly after the reports, firefighters arrived on scene and the evacuation of the facility had already been underway. Firefighters reported a slight smell coming from the auger, and further investigation showed that cardboard in the dumpster bin had been smoldering, the news release says.

The entire building was evacuated by 9:02 a.m. The dumpster bin was also pulled away from the building and soaked with water to fully extinguish the smoldering, according to the news release.

The cause of the smoldering is unknown. No firefighters or employees were injured during the incident, the news release says.

Both Greenwood Fire and the White River Township Fire Department responded to the incident.
