College notebook: Ray helps UIndy pick up tournament win

The University of Indianapolis women’s golf team won the inaugural nine-team Nemacolin Intercollegiate with sophomore Ava Ray, a Franklin graduate, carding a three-round score of 221 to tie for third individually.

Franklin

Senior tight end Drew Byerly made three catches totaling 20 yards and returned a kickoff for 14 yards as Marian football improved to 7-0 on the season with a 24-14 decision over St. Francis.

Setter Brooke Phillips supplied seven assists and eight digs but IUPUI volleyball lost in three sets at Cleveland State.

Center Grove

Junior middle hitter Grace Boggess finished with 12 kills, five blocks and two digs as Butler volleyball won in five sets against visiting DePaul.

Senior setter Madison Hammill finished with 18 assists and 11 digs for Wisconsin, which lost for the first time this season in a five-setter at Nebraska.

Eckerd College volleyball won all three matches at the South Region Crossover in straight sets, with junior Ashley Eck finishing with totals of 42 digs and 11 assists.

The UIndy men’s golf squad captured the Nemacolin Intercollegiate, an effort that included sophomore Drew Rowen going 80, 76, 74 for 28th place individually.

Marian wrapped up the fall portion of its season by taking fifth of eight teams at the Gibson Bay Match Play. Junior Brandon Heffner tied for 25th overall with a three-round score of 225.

Junior Alex Heck carded a 9-over-par 222 over the three rounds as St. Leo tied for 11th at the Copperhead Championship.

Freshman receiver Owen Wright made three catches for 48 yards in Franklin College football’s 50-35 home loss to Rose-Hulman.

Ohio State sophomore defensive end Caden Curry had a quarterback sack in the Buckeyes’ 20-12 decision over visiting Penn State.

Junior running back Carson Steele carried 20 times for 76 yards and three touchdowns to lead UCLA in a 42-7 win at Stanford.

Indiana State defensive lineman Lucas Hunter had two tackles in the team’s 17-3 home loss to South Dakota.

Defensive back Matt Soderdahl made three tackles while tight end Garrett Keith had a reception for seven yards as Hillsdale won over Thomas More, 35-33.

Sophomore linebacker Brayton Spetter made three tackles for Butler in its 37-10 victory at Dayton.

Indiana Wesleyan freshman punter Nolan Foley had six attempts for a 29.5-yard average as the Wildcats won at Madonna, 26-0.

Whiteland

Freshman running back Peyton Emberton carried six times for 21 yards and a score as St. Mary-of-the-Woods sprint football defeated Quincy, 28-14.

Taylor volleyball lost matches against Huntington and NAIA No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan, with sophomore outside hitter Sarah Scott good for two and six kills, respectively.

Freshman Amelia Edens helped the Aquinas College women’s swim team defeat Kalamazoo, 130-103, by scoring wins in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 500 free.

Indian Creek

Marian runner Luci Woodrum ran a time of 20 minutes, 54.70 seconds, good for 122nd overall, at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge.

Freshman quarterback Arjun Lothe completed four of his 10 pass attempts for 32 yards as Hanover lost at Mount St. Joseph, 52-27.

Greenwood

Julia Arruda was 121st overall in a time of 20:53.90 as IU East women’s cross country took part in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge.

Sophomore linebacker Gavin Ruppert made four tackles for Wabash College football in its 67-18 win at Kenyon.

Connecticut women’s volleyball lost at home in straight sets, though Huskies’ freshman Mya Ayro did finish with seven kills and a dig.

Senior Joy Maze delivered 13 kills, 10 digs and a pair of service aces to lead Manchester volleyball in a five-set triumph over visiting Rose-Hulman.

Wheeling College downed Glenville State and Fairmount State, with sophomore defensive specialist Melia Gorrell coming through with 10 and seven digs, respectively.

UIndy volleyball lost in four sets at Lewis despite senior Grace Hegwood (Greenwood) finishing with eight kills and 12 digs.
