College notebook: McCullough picks up all-HCAC honors

Senior Wyatt McCullough earned first-team all-conference honors as Franklin College men’s cross country placed third at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet. The former Franklin runner finished 12th individually in a time of 26 minutes, 26.58 seconds.

Another former Grizzly Cub, senior teammate Eli Cochrane, came in 46th in 28:35.36.

Franklin

Senior setter Brooke Phillips led IUPUI volleyball with 33 assists and 17 digs in a five-set home loss to Purdue Fort Wayne.

Senior tight end Drew Byerly had a 19-yard reception for Marian football in its 34-20 victory at Taylor.

Huntington freshman guard Kyndell Jochim had two rebounds and two blocked shots in the team’s season-opening 80-74 overtime loss to Indiana Tech. She added three points in an 81-69 loss at Holy Cross.

Center Grove

Freshman punter Nolan Foley had four attempts for an average of 31.5 yards, including two inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, for Indiana Wesleyan in its 52-21 win at St. Francis. Return man Drew Wheat had four kickoff returns for St. Francis, averaging 16.8 yards, and carried the ball eight times for 32 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Matt Soderdahl made two tackles for Hillsdale College in its 52-21 victory over Lake Erie.

UCLA junior running back Carson Steele carried the ball 11 times for 75 yards, and made two receptions for 14 yards and a touchdown in a 28-16 home win against Colorado.

Junior defensive lineman Lucas Hunter made two tackles and had an interception in Indiana State’s 36-33 overtime loss at North Dakota.

Eckerd College improved to 20-3 on the season with wins over Rollins College and Florida Tech. Junior defensive specialist Ashley Eck had 21 digs in each victory.

Wisconsin downed Michigan State in volleyball, with senior setter Madison Hammill producing 14 assists and five digs. The Badgers then defeated Minnesota in straight sets, with Hammill going for 21 assists and nine digs.

Butler volleyball lost five-set decisions at Seton Hall and St. John’s, with junior Grace Boggess supplying the Bulldogs nine kills in the opener and seven kills in the second match.

Indiana men’s golf placed 10th at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, an effort led by Noah Gillard posting a three-round total of 218 (tied for 20th individually).

Greenwood

Sophomore Quinn Kelly had four points and a game-high 16 rebounds off the bench as Taylor women’s basketball opened its season with an 82-55 win against Michigan-Dearborn. Kelly followed that with 12 points and eight boards in an 88-37 victory at Calumet.

Franklin College women’s cross country placed fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meet, with senior Mallory Watson finishing 30th in a time of 26:40.67.

Sophomore linebacker Gavin Ruppert tied for team-high honors with eight tackles for Wabash College in a 52-20 romp over visiting Wittenberg.

Freshman outside hitter Mya Ayro had eight and five kills, respectively, as the Connecticut volleyball team lost road matches to DePaul and Marquette.

Wheeling University volleyball improved to 20-6 on the season by defeating Frostburg State, with sophomore defensive specialist Melia Gorrell good for 11 digs and a service ace.

Manchester lost in straight sets at home to Mount St. Joseph despite six kills and nine digs from senior outside hitter Joy Maze.

Whiteland

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Scott had seven kills and two digs and two digs for Taylor volleyball in a three-set win over Goshen College.

Freshman running back Peyton Emberton carried the ball six times for 18 yards for St. Mary-of-the-Woods sprint football in a 35-6 triumph at Walsh University.

Greenwood Christian

Junior guard Izzy Reed had two rebounds and a steal for Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball in a 69-62 loss to Providence (Montana).

Roncalli

Wabash College junior defensive tackle Owen Volk (Greenwood) contributed three tackles in the football team’s 52-20 defeat of visiting Wittenberg.

Senior Grace Hegwood (Greenwood) had eight kills and 11 digs in a road loss to Missouri A&T and finished with 11 kills and 17 digs in a five-set loss at Maryville.
